This summer is set to treat us to one of the most eagerly awaited astronomical events. On 12 August, the sky will offer an exceptional spectacle with a solar eclipse that will cover almost the entire disc of the Sun in Andorra. Although the path of totality will pass further west across the Iberian Peninsula, in Andorra we will be able to witness a partial eclipse, with the Sun obscured by nearly 99 per cent. This is an event that has not occurred since 1912.
What will the solar eclipse on 12 August be like in Andorra?
We will gradually see the Moon cover the Sun until almost the entire surface is obscured. From Andorra, we will see a partial eclipse, as around 98.7 per cent of the Sun’s disc will remain hidden.
The astronomical phenomenon will begin at 7.33 pm, reach its peak at 8.27 pm and end shortly before 9.00 pm.
Although the eclipse will not be total in Andorra, the experience will be spectacular.
Where to watch the solar eclipse on 12 August in Andorra
It is advisable to choose an elevated spot with a clear view of the north-western horizon. As it will take place at sunset, the Sun will be very low on the horizon,
The best places to watch the eclipse in Andorra include:
- Port Cabús Pass (La Massana).
- The Beixalís Pass (from La Massana)
- The Tristaina Solar Viewpoint from Ordino-Arcalís, where a special event has been organised to observe the eclipse.

Other vantage points include certain peaks in Andorra such as Carroi, Cubil or Estanyó, or the higher parts of the Madriu and Sorteny valleys. Please note, however, that these routes are recommended only for people with mountaineering experience, good physical fitness and the appropriate equipment, as the ascents are challenging.
Important: road closures or access restrictions may be put in place at certain locations to ensure safety. Before setting off, check the traffic situation and make sure you arrive well in advance.
How to view the eclipse safely
Even though the Sun is almost completely covered, you must never look at it directly without protection, as the radiation remains dangerous to your eyesight.
To enjoy the eclipse safely:
- Only use approved eclipse glasses. In Andorra, you can find them in opticians’ shops and some tourist information offices.
- Do not use ordinary sunglasses or other makeshift methods.
• If you’re using binoculars, a telescope or a camera, fit a special solar filter in front of the lens. - Warm clothing or a jacket, as temperatures drop at dusk, especially at higher altitudes.
- A torch or headlamp, which will come in very handy on the way back, as the eclipse will end just as it gets dark.
• Water to keep you hydrated, especially if you plan to wait for several hours.
Before setting off, check the weather forecast. In August, the weather can change frequently.
Put the icing on the cake with the Perseids
Enjoy another of summer’s great astronomical spectacles: the Perseid meteor shower. Also known as the Tears of St. Lawrence.
Every August, this phenomenon allows you to see dozens of meteors per hour in dark skies free from light pollution. Thanks to Andorra’s altitude and the quality of its night sky, the Principality is a prime destination for observing them.
