Andorra is a true paradise for hiking enthusiasts. With over 70 lakes scattered throughout the country, its high-mountain landscapes offer some of the most spectacular routes in the Pyrenees. Crystal-clear waters, glacial cirques, peaks exceeding 2,500 metres and mountain refuges make every hike an unforgettable experience.
If you’re passionate about challenging hikes and want to discover Andorra at its wildest, these high-mountain lakes are a must on your list.
Estany Primer and Estany Segon de Juclà
Situated in the Vall d’Incles, the Juclà lakes form one of Andorra’s best-known lake systems. Estany Primer is the country’s largest lake and, together with Estany Segon, offers an unmissable mountain hike for any experienced walker.
During the ascent, the landscape changes constantly between forests, alpine meadows and rocky areas until you reach a spectacular glacial cirque where both lakes are situated. The Juclà Mountain Hut is also very close by, perfect for a break before continuing the route.
Difficulty: Moderate to high.
Estanys de Pessons
In the parish of Encamp, the Pessons glacial cirque is home to one of the largest concentrations of lakes in Andorra. The first lake is relatively accessible.
The route takes you through a high-mountain landscape dominated by enormous granite boulders and offers spectacular views of the peaks in the east of the country.
More experienced walkers can link up different routes to complete a challenging day’s hike.
Difficulty: Moderate, with advanced options.
Estany de l’Illa
Situated in the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Estany de l’Illa is one of Andorra’s most iconic lakes.
The hike passes through one of the Principality’s best-preserved natural areas until it reaches this large mountain lake, where the Refugio de l’Illa mountain refuge is also situated.
It is a long route, but extraordinarily rewarding for those seeking nature in its purest form.
Level: High.
Tips for exploring high-mountain lakes
High-mountain routes require proper planning and a good level of fitness. The routes are usually demanding and long, taking at least 4 hours.
Before setting off on any hike, it is advisable to:
- Check the weather forecast.
- Wear hiking boots and warm clothing, even in summer.
- Carry sufficient water and food.
- Download the route or use a map of the area.
- Set off early to avoid afternoon storms, which are common during the summer months.
- Always respect the natural environment and follow the signposted paths.
If you’re hiking with your dog, remember to keep it under control, especially in areas where there is livestock or wildlife. On many of these routes, your dog can accompany you without any problems, provided you respect the natural environment and other walkers.
